Individual Case Analyses You will be assigned two cases for which you will write a maximum 5-page case analysis (not including references or optional
appendices). You are not limited to the number of appendices (tables, charts, diagrams, financial analyses) included to support your
report. Your case report is due at the beginning of the class during which we discuss the case. See the last pages of this syllabus for
some formatting suggestions.
Case Write-Ups Writing case analyses will be both difficult and fun. Your written reports of cases will be evaluated as if they were the result of a
paid consulting contract. The report should add value beyond what management already knew from the facts in the case. Was the
report worth the fee paid to the consultant? Would the consultant be rehired or offered a position within the company based on the
value of their work?
Format:
1. Double-spaced and single-sided, with (approximately) one-inch margins, typed or word-processed, on standard-sized white
paper, with pages numbered. 10- or 12-point types are good sizes.
2. Stapled or reliably fastened, with your name(s) on the title or first page.
3. Individual case analyses should be between 4 and 5 pages long, including the
executive summary. Clarity and concision count more than length.
Suggested Framework:
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This section summarizes the major problems facing the firm and the proposed solution, stating your reasoning and the methods by
which you would implement the suggested course of action. The summary should be a relatively self-contained, "in-a-nutshell"
description of the analysis performed in the rest of the case and your proposed plan. This should be no more than one page, placed
separately at the beginning.
PEST Analysis,
3Cs - Customer, Competitor and Company Analysis
This is a critical presentation of the firm's current predicament, examining specific strengths and weaknesses and how these derived
from the firm's past actions. This assessment should include (but not be limited to!) an analysis of Industry and
Environment,Customers, Competition, and Company, as well as any other facts that deserve attention. No more than two pages.
VALUE PROPOSITION
explains how your product solves customers’ problems or improves their situation (relevancy),
delivers specific benefits (quantified value),
tells the ideal customer why they should buy from you and not from the competition (unique differentiation).
STRATEGIC OPTIONS
This includes a list of general directions in which the firm might go to resolve its problems.Analysis of pros and cons of each pricing strategy. Then analysis why you choose the pricing strategy. Accompanying each option should bea critical evaluation of its inherent advantages and disadvantages. When possible, the appropriate financial (break-even) analysisshould be included. Illustrate the range and variety of plausible goals and actions for the firm under likely conditions and overall
strategies. No more than two pages.
