This section, along with the following two sections (Characterizing the Event and The Emergency Management Cycle) should be about one-quarter of the length of your paper.
Characterizing the Event Use at least one paragraph to indicate whether your disruptive event is natural or man-made. Describe these two types of events, and cite your sources.
Use at least one paragraph to indicate which large group hazards your event belongs in. If you are unsure, go back and read the Multi-Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment readings in Unit 2. Cite your sources.
Use at least one paragraph to define the terms
emergency, disaster, and
catastrophe. Characterize which category your disruptive event falls in, and why. Cite your sources.
The Emergency Management Cycle Use several paragraphs to define/describe the four phases of the emergency management cycle. Discuss which phase (or phases) your term paper is focused upon.
Description of the Event Use several paragraphs to describe the disruptive event you have chosen. This section of paper should be about one-quarter of the total length. You decide how much detail you need for your analysis, which follows.
Analysis This section of your paper should be about one-half the length of your paper. Things you might include in this section include:
- What areas were emergency management and emergency response personnel successful? Why? Provide specific examples from your sources, and cite the sources.
- What areas were emergency management and emergency response personnel unsuccessful? Why? Provide specific examples from your sources, and cite the sources.
- What could other emergency management organizations learn from this event to improve their own capabilities for the future? Provide specific examples from your sources, and cite the sources.
- What changes in public policy or existing laws would minimize future risk? Why? Provide specific examples from your sources, and cite the sources.
Conclusions This section should include one or two paragraphs which emphasize the key lessons to be learned from your disruptive event.
References Include a reference list which lists the source material cited in your paper.
